Best of Me

Master P’s “Call Me When You Need Some” blared through Fire’s speakers as we cruised down Shawnee Mission Pkwy. I couldn’t help but to periodically glance over at Fire, smiling to myself when he wasn’t paying attention. Damn. How does a dude this fine not have a girlfriend? That question plagued me. He was every girl’s ideal boyfriend. Flawless face. Dimples. Eyes that just made you want to walk into them and lips that make you want to suck them off of his face. He had the clothes, the money, and the name. Fire had it all. The ride was pretty silent until I finally mustered up enough gumption to break the ice.

“Nice truck.” I said to Fire as I examined the inside of the luxurious ride. The interior was all black, and the in dash was all steel with a navigation screen in the middle of it.

“Thanks mama.” He grinned, looking between me and the road. “It looks a hell of a lot better now that you’re in it.”

I bit down on the insides of my cheeks to keep from smiling. He had a way with flattery. As Fire focused on driving, I dissected him again while he bobbed his head to the music.

“You’re a player, aren’t you?” I simply asked, narrowing my eyes at him as I turned down his radio so I could hear him clearly.

Fire smiled, his eyebrows pinched together. “Where’d that come from?”

“Answer the question.”

“Why? Do you think I’m a player?” I questioned, looking between me and the road.

“Actually – yeah, I do.”

“And why do you think that?”

I shrugged my shoulders as I glanced at my window then back at Fire. “Usually guys who are as fly as you have a girlfriend – or two.”

“Or two?” Fire laughed.

“Yeah. I mean you’ve been here two months already, yet I haven’t heard about you being with anybody nor have I seen you with anyone. Why is that?”

“Despite what you think of me, I’m very meticulous about who I invest my time in. Not every chick that comes my way is worth my time. I have pretty high standards when it comes to girls I choose to mess around with.”

I scoffed. “I find it hard to believe you have very high standards, seeing how you’re dating Tiffany Lovelace.” I grimaced at the thought of her. “And you’re hot topic right now at school. All the girls have been raving and ranting on and on about you ever since your first day. I see how they check you out and act when you come around. Like you’re some type of heaven sent or something.”

“That type of shit doesn’t excite me. Those girls only have one thing to offer me, and I can get that from anybody. And let me correct you on one thing. I dated Tiffany. I haven’t been with that girl in almost two years, and I have no intentions on rekindle a damn thing with her.”

“So if you’re not dating, then you must have a lot of sex partners then?” I gauged Fire for a response.
